About this role:
Carrier is seeking a highly motivated Model-Based Controls engineer to participate in our global teams that develop Carrier’s embedded control products. These solutions require the development of control algorithms for residential HVAC systems. This individual would be responsible for the design and development of the control architecture and algorithms for HVAC products.

Key Responsibilities:
The candidate will have responsibility for the following in addition to ad-hoc assignments as needed.
Modeling: Support Model-Based Development activities through the development of physics-based transient models for controls analysis and design.
Controls analysis and design: Use models for controls design including but not limited to setpoint specification and maps, as well as regulator design and tuning, failure handling, optimization, and diagnostics.
Controls MBD: Define/develop Control system requirements, Control verification & validation
model-in-loop simulation
software-in-loop simulation
rapid prototyping control
Software Integration: support control software integration
Data analysis and experimental design: Interact with team members from the lab to support the design of experiments and analysis of experimental data for both model validation and controller performance verification. Support field trials and address control-related issues.
Participate with Carrier’s Marketing organization to help define the technology roadmap for future residential HVAC embedded controls systems
Balances the responsibilities of sustaining and new product development projects
Participates in risk identification reviews
Responsible for individual contributions and leading small projects or providing technical leadership within the MBD discipline
Makes a significant contribution to their team by applying their knowledge of model-based design discipline
Works with moderate guidance on projects with a short-term and long-term focus
Required Qualifications:
Bachelors in Engineering
8+ years of experience in New Product Introduction and Control Systems development.
Preferred Qualifications:
Physics-based and empirical modeling experience including but not limited to usage of Modelica as a plant modeling tool as well as Matlab / Simulink for controls analysis and design. Experience with debugging and speedup of numeric solvers desired.
Simulink modeling for
control algorithms
auto-code generation
control verification & validation.
Control algorithm development in industrial environments including linear and nonlinear regulator design techniques. Preferred experience in multivariable synthesis, hybrid control, and model or learning-based control strategies.
Experience in MBD workflows for system design - from requirements specification, to design, and to performance verification.
Experience in working in cross-discipline teams across a variety of physical locations (a-synchronous development).
Scientific computing – proficiency in Python, Matlab, and Simulink. Desired experience in Modelica, FMU usage, parallel computation, and HPC.
Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to work across business units and other engineering functions.
HVAC System design experience preferred
- Minimal travel for the positions. Around 5 percent total.
