About This Role

Carrier has an exciting opportunity for an Embedded Controls Architect to join its Carrier Controls, Connectivity and Electrical Engineering team located in Syracuse, NY. We are providing game changing solutions to make Carrier’s truck, trailer, and container transportation refrigeration units sustainable, smarter, and connected. We design, develop, and qualify electrical systems of transport refrigeration products which include connected power conversion, electronic microcontroller systems, and connectivity devices. We are continuously adopting new development technologies and capabilities to deliver advanced solutions for a safe and sustainable cold chain.

The Embedded Controls Architect, a Principal Engineer role, will be the key technical leader defining, designing, and qualifying the next generation controls solutions for transport refrigeration. To be successful, the Architect will apply technical expertise which include hardware and software design and system integration into refrigeration products. The Architect will also be ensuring seamless integration and coordination of software and electrical engineering teams leading new control platform design and development projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in a diverse team defining and representing the architecture of next generation electronic controls including hardware, firmware, application software, and interfaces
  • Drive with passion and energy the coordination and collaboration among engineering teams (electrical, software, mechanical) to ensure the best control solution is defined and developed
  • Understand cost/performance trade-offs, allocate functional software modules to hardware, ensure adopted software architectures are compatible with controls hardware
  • Help with the selection and identification of best-in-class partners for controls hardware design and manufacturing
  • Own controls requirements specifications, interface with hardware designers to ensure electronics meets specifications
  • As necessary, help developing robust qualification plans to ensure controls solution will operate reliably in all required conditions (including controls DFMEA)
  • Promote the adoption, where suitable, of modeling tools and other technologies to improve controls development and qualification efficiency
  • Contribute to sustaining and troubleshooting of controls platforms, identification of technology risks and their cost-effective mitigation and solution
  • Conduct, organize, document design technical reviews seeking consensus on technical decisions and design direction, follow up on actions
  • Execute prototype development with team to demonstrate effectiveness of architecture solutions within project schedule

Required Qualifications:

  • B. Sc. degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of industry experience.
  • Due to contractual agreements, must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with refrigeration systems operating in severe environmental conditions
  • Understanding of electrical/electronic interfaces including electromagnetic interference
  • Experience with communication protocols for real time controls (e.g. CAN, I2C)
  • Experience with wired and wireless protocols, I/O data acquisition, sampling, and signal integrity
  • Ability to develop embedded controls software (C, C++)
  • Familiarity with electronic hardware design
  • Understanding pf product cybersecurity and its implications with controls systems design
  • Knowledge of modern experimental and modeling/simulation methods, instrumentation, and measurement systems
  • A leader with ability to build project teams, fostering coordination, resolve conflicts, coach and mentor early career engineers into the next generation of architects
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Possess strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • A driver of innovation, continuously seeking to adopt new technologies with an open mind while measuring risks
