HVAC Service Technician (Apprentice) – Job Description
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required
A valid driver’s license is required
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of Heating, Venting, Air Conditioning (HVAC) maintenance and repair; hazard and safety practices common to the trade
HVAC controls and safety devices; appropriate Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) / chemical usages; tools of the trade; materials and refrigerant recovery equipment and procedures used in installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC systems
Computerized electrical circuits and systems as they relate to air-conditioning, heating, ventilating, and refrigerated cooling
Sheet metal, electrical, plumbing and carpentry
Basic understanding of building automation controls
Ability to:
Push/pull/lift up to 50lbs
Interpret building codes and regulations as they relate to HVAC
Properly install refrigerant compressors
Diagnose problems and make recommendations
Make estimates of materials required
Repair and replace damaged parts and equipment
Read blueprints, floor plans and wiring diagrams
Read and interpret City, State, and EPA regulations
Work independently in the absence of supervision
Work closely with colleagues as part of an integrated team
Follow standard processes to accomplish tasks
Understand and follow oral and written directions
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Work at various changing work areas including elevated heights, on ladders/platforms
Safely operate company vehicles, machinery, and equipment
Recognize safety hazards commonly found in HVAC operations, and identify and implement appropriate controls to ensure safe work
Identify situations that require escalation or elevation to Supervisor or Manager for guidance or need to request additional support
Competent in the proper use of hand and electrical tools
Possess basic knowledge of computers and cell phone apps
Able to rig and properly set up gantry for safely lifting equipment, overhauling pumps, chillers etc.
Understand the proper and safe use of chain blocks, rigging straps and trolleys
Machinery, Tools, Equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment required:
Personal Protective Equipment as required according to company hazard assessments
Medical surveillance participation (i.e. annual hearing tests, respiratory fit-testing/physicals, etc.) may be required
Essential tools (various tools depending on job assignments)
Service/Maintenance vehicles – may require DOT physicals per regulatory requirement
Ability to operate and maintain various models of power industrial vehicles/aerial lift equipment
Essential Task Description: (daily tasks and duties)
Inspect air-conditioning units to ensure efficient operation
Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units
Diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions
Install, replace, or repair damaged equipment; calibrate thermostatic controls
Install new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems; repair and replace damaged or worn heating, ventilation and air-conditioning parts and equipment; repair or replace low- and high-pressure liquid lines
Inspect and observe pressure of liquids and vapor with instrumentation to ensure efficient operation of unit and make necessary adjustment; inspect and service refrigeration equipment including refrigerators, ice machines, gas packs, and heat pumps
Maintain the chilled and hot water supply systems
Adjust and maintain internal electrical and electronic control systems; cleans coils, blowers, checks motors, and belt tensions
Assemble and install metal ductwork
Assist in planning and designing of new installations of heating and air-conditioning systems
Maintain maintenance records as required by City, State, and EPA regulations
Performs additional duties and responsibilities as required
Recognize and identify potential risks and hazards associated with performing all work-related duties safely
Work to mitigate potential risks associated with essential duties
Collaborate with management personnel to maintain safe working environments
Participate in a comprehensive OSHA-approved safety course (preferably OSHA 10- or 30-hour course) and adhere to company and regulatory compliance programs
Obtain or carry current low voltage electrical card
Obtain or carry EPA refrigerant license
Wear appropriate company issued uniform
