About this role
Carrier is seeking a Data Engineer, Sensor Technologies Fall 2023 co-op to join the Fire, Security & Sensor Technologies (FSAS) team and help provide innovation and early technology development and vetted technology options for Carrier's Fire & Security businesses. The position will be based in Bradenton, FL USA. The co-op position provides opportunities to learn and apply engineering skills, while gaining understanding of industrial research & development processes. The successful candidate will receive training through project assignments that will combine the technical skills acquired in college coursework with industry expertise from the FSAS team.
Key Responsibilities
- The primary functions of the role will be to analyze data and develop advanced algorithms using pre-production sensor assemblies.
- Test hardware, and experimental setups developed as part of the research process by the FSAS team and to carry out an experimental and analytical evaluation of the hardware and software algorithms under the guidance of FSAS principal investigators.
Required Qualifications
- Pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degree program, majoring in a scientific or engineering discipline.
- 3.0 or higher GPA
Preferred Qualifications
- Pursuing master’s degree, majoring in a scientific or engineering discipline.
- Ability to process raw or unstructured data streams from prototype sensors using data processing scripts developed in Python, Matlab or similar software tools.
- Ability to visualize and analyze processed data in Matlab, Jupyter notebooks, or similar tools and bring the data into AI analytical tools.
- Experience with processing data streams from sensing technologies, such as metal oxide, electrochemical, optical (non-dispersive infrared, passive infrared, light scattering), light intensity, and/or sound.
- Previous experience or technical understanding of how to combine these data streams into an AI algorithm for the purposes of event classification.
- Understanding on how to compress these algorithms so they can run not only in cloud architectures, but also locally on microcontrollers (Edge-based AI). This can be explored as part of the co-op, if prior experience is missing.
- Experience setting up and conducting experimental tests, including experimental design, data acquisition, and results synthesis.
- Project management skills beneficial
- English language technical writing skills, applied to results reporting and standard operating procedure documentation.
