About This Role

We are seeking an established Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Syracuse, NY based Global Compression – Screw Compressor development team. The group is responsible for developing the next generation of screw compressors to be applied in a full range of HVAC/R equipment and systems for buildings applications.  As a Senior Engineer, you will work closely with the project manager, our laboratory team, design and drafting team and a cross functional development team to support our system development teams, factories, and company’s customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to as well as lead projects or sub-projects pertaining to product development, reliability, and quality improvement of screw compressors.
  • Mechanical design and analysis of components such as screw rotors, rolling element bearings, shaft seals, and pressure containing machined castings.
  • Understand the physics of the compression process and interaction with system to advance existing models improving performance prediction, speed and quality of design.
  • Develop physics based thermal and mechanical models of compressors used in HVAC&R systems. Perform model calibration, validation, and physics-based analysis of system behaviors.
  • Complete numerical analysis to simulate compressor system and component performance.
  • Evaluate new technologies and interact with suppliers to define “best-in-class” compressor solutions for HVAC&R applications.
  • Apply knowledge of DOE, FMEA, tolerance analysis, simulation and statistical methods to improve robustness and quality of compressor designs.
  • Deliver solutions that are most cost effective, efficient, and reliable.  Develop & review qualification plans for components in compressors in situ and at the supplier.
  • Ability to work closely with designers/drafters & participate in drawing reviews.
  • Work closely with lab personnel to develop & execute laboratory test plans.
  • Document design and development procedures in Engineering Standard Work.
  • Prepare and present project status reports to management.
  • Lead and actively participate in Design Reviews.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in an Engineering discipline with 5+ years of prior Mechanical Engineering experience OR an Advanced degree and 3+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the mechanical design of components for rotating or reciprocating machinery such as engines or compressors is desired.
  • Must have a strong mechanical aptitude and background should include Mechanics of Materials, Machine Design, Vibration and Statistics or Reliability.
  • Experience with modeling tools such as MATLAB, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and/or machine learning techniques is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to stakeholders.
  • Well-developed analytical thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data, identify trends, develop conclusions, and propose solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, collaboration, responsibility, dependability, leadership, flexibility, motivation, respect, and persistence.
  • Capable of leading and working in a team-oriented environment across a multi-cultural global organization.
