About This Role
The Chief Engineer’s mission is to provide strategic leadership of a product line solution to ensure that technical concepts and product launches meet Product requirements and component roadmaps reflect upcoming trends for our products.
In addition the Chief Engineer supports the Product Owner throughout the product cycle as a technical sparring partner. S/he provides active support using her/his extensive expert knowledge and directs technical teams. S/he is responsible for domain-specific technology strategy development with the Engineering leadership and the head of product.
Focus of the Chief Engineer is on product development, from ideation and concepting through product launch. Support in post-launch lifecycle stages is in particular related to complex topics with multiple dependencies. Support on next generation technologies is related to ensuring upcoming trends for technology and component roadmaps meet customer needs and business growth opportunities.
The Chief Engineering Leader for the segment develops the discipline and leads chief engineers for the product lines within the segment.

- Acts as technical senior expert for dedicated Product Line and the corresponding modules with focus on customer needs and product launches
- Defines technology strategy/roadmap needs in order to drive innovation that supports the product line roadmap.
- Monitors third party intellectual property rights and drives own applications for intellectual property rights
- Co-creates solutions for complex development challenges together with the technical experts
- Owns concept decisions and releases on features and relevant modules in alignment with program and product leaders
- Evaluates effectiveness of engineering standards within his/her product line and gives input for improvements to the R&D organization and Function Leads
- Collects knowledge, supports the shaping of public opinion and contributes in standardization bodies
- Identifies technical challenges in advance and proposes solutions
- Has final decision authority on all product safety issues
Support of Product and Program Management during the development and launch phase of product development as the technical leader responsible for driving excellent engineering performance of new product introductions.
S/he serves as peer and sparring partner for all kinds of technical questions and proactive input. This includes the technical evaluation of product features, attending planning, roadmapping meetings and meetings with suppliers, external partners or customers as technical advisor. S/he supports the Product Owner in understanding and assessing competitor products.
Sparring and support for technical key questions and significant barriers
S/he is part of the technical core team for all products in the product line and is supporting concept creation, in particular for complex issues with multiple dependencies. For such concepts, the Chief Engineer is working closely with the technical experts in Systems Engineering, Engineering & Technology and all domain experts. S/he collects required additional knowledge and consults external experts to support the team with all the required knowledge to overcome issues. In any case, the Chief Engineer is amongst others a general approver for business and technical requirements as well as product development deliverables.
Identification of technical challenges
The Chief Engineer has the task to identify upcoming technical challenges in advance and plan strategies to mitigate those. This includes reporting and solving such topics with the team, R&D management and external suppliers.
Mindset
In a mainly supportive role for various parts of the organization, s/he needs to be open minded and interested to dive into technical topics with fast pace and down to the bottom. Additionally, s/he needs to be able to communicate technical topics adaptively to different audiences. S/he will support whatever technical topic needs special attendance without executing the implementation or taking responsibility or freedom away from the individual teams, its members or leaders.
Interfaces / Stakeholders:
- Management (for escalation of technical, process or resource issues)
- Product Owners for product lines and global product considerations (for tech consulting, early phase technical feature evaluation and roadmapping)
- Program Managers for execution of new product introduction programs
- Module Owners for cross-company knowledge transfer, concepting phase tech consulting and advisory, requirements approval
- System Engineering, Engineering & Technology and module owner domain experts (for project support, critical project issues, bidirectional support/sparring)
- Entire segment engineering team (checking on process issues and technical sparring)
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree & 12+ years of engineering development experience
- OR
- Advanced degree & 10+ years of engineering development experience
- 10+ years of engineering leadership experience
- Ability to travel up to 50%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a Chief Engineering role for New Product Development
