External Description:

About NORESCO:

NORESCO, a part of Carrier Global Corporation, helps clients modernize aging building systems and upgrade energy and water infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of the 21st century. We implement innovative energy efficiency, distributed generation, energy storage, and renewable energy solutions that optimize the operational efficiency and improve resilience of buildings, campuses, military installations, and communities. To date, NORESCO has implemented solutions that provide more than $5 billion in guaranteed energy and operating cost savings at more than 10,000 facilities, while reducing customer CO2 emissions by more than 25 million metric tons – the equivalent of planting 1.4 million acres of forest.

About This Role

NORESCO is seeking a Microgrid Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the development, analysis, and modeling of microgrid solutions for municipal, higher education, industrial, commercial, and federal customers. The SME will advise project development teams on integrating on‑site renewables, fossil generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and the control systems required for effective microgrid operation. The SME will also monitor emerging technologies—such as small modular reactors (SMRs)—and develop sufficient internal expertise to guide future microgrid applications as the industry evolves. This role reports to the Associate Vice President of Engineering and Analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as NORESCO’s microgrid technical advisor, providing guidance on microgrid technologies, controls, microgrid control networks, Distributed Energy Resources, DER integration, and BESS applications.
  • Develop quick-assessment tools and standardized analysis methods for feasibility review and go/no-go decisions. Lead Xendee or other analysis tool training and workflow integration to support efficient and consistent microgrid evaluations across development, engineering and analysis teams.
  • Maintain up-to-date microgrid technology and costing data, including equipment specs, pricing, utility rate data, incentives, production characteristics, utility constraints, and codes and standards.
  • Support sales and proposal teams by contributing to technical content, attending client meetings, and participating in presentations and interviews.
  • Identify and evaluate microgrid and BESS equipment providers; maintain relationships and participate in partner selection with internal teams.
  • Provide technical input to Procurement and Construction teams during equipment selection, scope development, and project implementation.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineers to develop standardized scopes, specifications, and modeling assumptions for microgrid and BESS systems.
  • Work with Analysis Engineers to support energy modeling, production modeling, and economic pro forma development for microgrid/BESS projects.
  • Provide advisory support during commissioning, measurement & verification, and O&M activities for microgrid systems as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Structured Finance team on technical assumptions for long-term service agreements, PPAs, and related financial models.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and market developments and collaborate with NORESCO groups to align strategies and share best practices.
  • Engage with industry groups, maintain professional knowledge, and deliver internal training or knowledge-sharing sessions on microgrid and BESS technologies. Develop relationships with Utility companies and stay current with requirements for utility interconnect agreements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience with microgrids, DERs, and/or BESS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or a clear path to obtaining one
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to develop custom microgrid/BESS simulation models
  • Effective communication, leadership, and project management capabilities
  • Demonstrated ownership of schedule, issue resolution, and delivery commitments
  • Graduate degree in engineering or business (preferred)
  • Ability to build collaborative, productive working relationships across teams
  • Strong business judgment, risk awareness, and strategic thinking
  • Experience with engineering for federal facilities and ability to obtain federal security clearance
  • Proven customer-facing communication skills and comfort working on active project sites
  • Experience supporting projects across the full lifecycle—from concept through development, design, implementation, commissioning, as well as long term Operations and Maintenance

Location:

  • Able to work remotely from anywhere within the United States, with the ability to travel up to 25%.
