About This Role

This Commissioning Engineer II role focuses on leading commissioning and field verification activities to ensure building systems are installed correctly, perform as intended, and meet design and operational goals. It combines hands-on diagnostics, testing, and troubleshooting in the field with collaborative project coordination and technical communication across design, construction, and client teams. The position also supports detailed design review and develops comprehensive commissioning documentation to guide projects from planning through successful system turnover.

Key Responsibilities:

Field Commissioning & Site Work

  • Visit job sites locally and across the U.S. to test building systems, verify installation quality, and troubleshoot performance or installation issues.
  • Perform hands‑on diagnostics using field testing instruments and measurement equipment.
  • Perform Measurement & Verification (M&V) tasks including air and water flow measurements and BMS trend analysis.
  • Support site inspections to assess system readiness, installation quality, and adherence to construction documents.
  • Conduct and lead field testing, diagnostics, and functional performance testing (FPT) to verify that systems meet design intent.
  • Perform in‑depth troubleshooting, lead issue resolution efforts, and work directly with contractors and facility staff to correct deficiencies.
  • Provide advanced field verification of installation quality, system readiness, and adherence to drawings and specifications.

Project Coordination & Communication

  • Collaborate with design and construction teams from planning through turnover to align commissioning objectives across project phases.
  • Deliver clear and professional technical information during internal and client discussions.
  • Lead or co‑lead coordination with design and construction teams across all project phases.
  • Represent NORESCO in project meetings, presenting findings, recommendations, and commissioning progress to stakeholders.
  • Support management of project schedules, milestones, and commissioning workflows.
  • Mentor and guide staff in field procedures, documentation, and best practices.

Design & Documentation Review

  • Evaluate BAS/BMS data, energy usage, and system trends to identify performance issues or optimization opportunities.
  • Support review of submittals and design documents against Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) and Basis of Design (BOD).
  • Conduct detailed reviews of project specifications, drawings, controls sequences, and equipment submittals for commission ability.
  • Identify risks, design gaps, and system integration issues; communicate recommendations to design teams.
  • Analyze complex BAS/BMS data, energy usage trends, and sequence execution across multiple systems.

Cx Documentation Development

  • Create commissioning plans, checklists, functional performance tests, and other project‑specific commissioning documentation.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports summarizing findings, deficiencies, and corrective recommendations.
  • Assist with assembling turnover deliverables, including commissioning logs, test documentation, and systems manual content.
  • Prepare final commissioning reports and system manual documentation.
  • Support or lead turnover documentation and facilitate commissioning closeout.

  • Pursue advanced commissioning and energy certifications (BCxP, CBCP, EBCP, CEM, etc.).
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and coaching to early‑career team members.

Travel Requirement:

  • Travel up to 20% to support project sites across the U.S.

Additional Requirements:

  • Flexibility to work occasional after-hours schedules to support project needs.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of commissioning, building systems engineering experience

Or

  • High School Diploma/ GED and 10+ years of commissioning, building systems engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Facilities or related discipline).
  • Experience in commissioning of mechanical/electrical/plumbing/fire alarm/fire protection system.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC systems, building automation systems (BAS/BMS), or building controls
  • Experience using field testing equipment (e.g., flow hoods, anemometers, data loggers, multimeters).
  • Has experience commissioning in hospital environment and knowledge of joint commissioning requirements.
  • Proficiency with commissioning tools, software (e.g., Facility Grid), and Cx documentation workflows.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills with HVAC and control systems, including instrumentation and integration.
  • Experience managing portions of project schedules, priorities, or budgets.
  • Experience leading or facilitating issue resolution with owners, designers, contractors, and operations staff.
  • Knowledge of energy codes, ASHRAE guidelines, LEED commissioning, and industry best practices.
  • Knowledge of TAB procedures or energy auditing methodologies is a plus.
  • Progress toward or possession of industry certifications (BCxP, CBCP, EBCP, CEM, BCA CxP, etc.).
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and time‑management skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Interest in mentoring and supporting junior commissioning staff is a plus.
