Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic performs preventive and corrective maintenance on HVACR and related laboratory equipment to ensure reliable operation across testing infrastructure and facilities. Operating under moderate supervision, this role troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and control-system issues, installs and modifies system piping and wiring, and maintains strict adherence to EH&S and lockout/tagout safety standards.

This is a full-time, onsite position located at the facility in Syracuse, NY.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVACR and related laboratory equipment using established procedures and standard work.
• Troubleshoot basic to moderately complex HVACR, mechanical, electrical, and control-system issues; escalate complex or unfamiliar problems as appropriate.
• Install, connect, and modify HVACR equipment, piping, wiring, controls, and supporting components for psychrometric testing and facility upgrades.
• Coordinate assigned maintenance and repair activities with laboratory technicians, engineers, supervision, and other trades to minimize test interruption.
• Fabricate or modify parts, piping, brackets, and equipment for routine and non-standard laboratory applications using approved methods.
• Document completed work, equipment condition, materials used, and follow-up needs in the applicable maintenance or work-order system.
• Support laboratory EH&S requirements by following lockout/tagout, electrical safety, refrigerant-handling, lifting, rigging, hot-work, and other applicable procedures.
• Assist less-experienced technicians by demonstrating established procedures and sharing practical job knowledge.
• Work under moderate supervision using established procedures, technical references, and sound judgment to complete assigned work.
• Plan and complete routine assignments independently and seek guidance for high-risk, highly complex, or unfamiliar work.
• Maintain a safety-first approach, stop work when conditions are unsafe, and support continuous improvement by identifying practical equipment or process improvements.

Required Qualifications

• Associate degree in a technical field, or completion of technical training.
• 5+ years of HVACR, industrial maintenance, facilities maintenance, or skilled-trades experience.
• EPA Section 608 Type I and Type II certification required, or the ability to acquire within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Universal EPA certification.
• OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification, or the ability to obtain OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification after hire.
• Working knowledge of HVACR systems, components, refrigeration cycles, maintenance practices, and repair procedures.
• Experience diagnosing and resolving routine and moderately complex equipment problems with general direction.
• Working knowledge of electrical power distribution, low-voltage controls, common electrical components, and safe troubleshooting practices.
• Experience reading and interpreting equipment manuals, engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
• Experience performing basic control configuration or programming tasks using established instructions; escalates advanced programming needs.
• Experience fabricating and repairing copper, brass, black iron, and PVC piping.
• Experience in brazing and soldering, including phosphorus-copper, silver, and soft solder.
• MIG welding experience.
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, meters, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
• Experience operating powered industrial trucks, scissor lifts, aerial lifts, cranes, and rigging equipment after required training and authorization.
• Experience communicating clearly, working effectively with technicians and engineers, and complying with all EH&S procedures and standard work.
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Experience using electronic maintenance or work-order systems.
