ABOUT THIS ROLE:

The Carrier Fire and Security (F&S) Product Safety Officer (PSO) plays an important role in potential product safety investigations, new product development, and the growth of product safety culture in the organization.

The position reports to the Associate Director WHQ Product Safety and is responsible for the leadership of the Fire and Security (FS) global product safety program.   The ideal candidate has a broad technical background and cross functional experiences in engineering, manufacturing and or quality.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Key functions of the position include leadership and coordination of F&S global product safety personnel (~24 employees), Product and Services (“PASS”) program and New Product Development (NPD) product safety risk management and promoting a product safety culture.  Key skills include organization, project management, reporting, and training for global F&S product safety leaders and teams.  Engagement with leadership, engineering, quality, supply chain, manufacturing and field personnel is necessary to ensure the value stream resolves potential product safety issues timely and proactively identifies and controls product safety critical activities and features. 

The F&S Product Safety Officer will have responsibility for the following:

Product and Services Safety (“PASS”) program

  • Coach and mentor investigation teams in the:

    Identification and priority of project tasks, timeline and resources

    Application of robust quality analysis tools (i.e., Ishikawa, 5 Why’s, Red X, 6 Sigma) to identify root cause and validate mistake proof solutions

    Performance of potential safety risk assessment

    Development and presentation of options for field action to F&S and WHQ PASS Council and leadership teams

  • Track the progress of PASS incidents (utilizing Enablon and PBI Dashboard) and ensure compliance with regulatory, internal, and external field communication and remediation tracking
  • Maintain and improve KPI’s to ensure the overall health of the product safety program, drive continuous process improvement
  • Ensure functioning feedback loop of product safety lessons (utilizing iZone) for future robust design and continuous improvement efforts.

NPD Product Safety

  • Provide oversight, training, and leadership to cross functional F&S teams for NPD product safety deliverables (including Safety FMEA, Safety Review and Hazard Assessments and new technology safety assessments) and WHQ F&S level product safety reviews to ensure potential safety risks are identified and mitigated prior to launch
  • Partner with quality and operations to ensure processes are certified, and controls are in place to monitor critical to safety characteristic

Product Safety Culture

  • Promote a product safety culturing including training of the global F&S business in the identification, resolution management and reporting processes for potential product safety concerns.
  • Report KPIs monthly through the Engineering dashboard and review progress, risks and continuous improvement activities quarterly with F&S WHQ PASS Council and leadership team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering or related technical field
  • 10+ years of technical experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.S. Degree in Engineering or related technical field or M.B.A.
  • 12+ years of applicable experience
  • Certification/experience in a recognized problem-solving methodology (i.e. Certified QE, Red X, 6 Sigma or equivalent) and program management
  • Experience collaborating and developing a global team of indirect reports
  • Excellent project management skills and execution
  • Background in process management and/or robust quality tools and methods (i.e. Certified QE, Red X, 6 Sigma or equivalent)
  • Ability to understand and apply knowledge of Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Software, Hardware and or Materials
  • Proven ability to implement lessons learned continuous improvements and standardize processes
  • Proven ability to influence and work effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail, while also able to prioritize
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a successful track record, both written and verbal across a wide audience
  • Outstanding follow-up and follow-through skills
  • Self-starter with ability to learn quickly and work independently
