About this role:

Det-Tronics is an industry leading division of Carrier’s global Industrial Fire and Safety business, and has an exciting opportunity for an Approvals Test Engineer in the Engineering Approvals & Test team to support their existing and growing portfolio of fire, gas and smoke detection products.  

These detection products utilize a variety of proprietary sensing technologies from optical to chemical that must be certified to a wide range of industry standards and country-specific regulations. Customers around the world rely on these connected products to keep people and property safe in challenging hazardous environments found in applications from traditional POG (Petrochemical, Oil and Gas) markets to the latest Renewable & Clean Energy ones. This Approvals Test Engineer position offers a rewarding career in Carrier to be directly involved in testing & approval of safety products for these diverse markets and applications. 

About this role: 

The Approvals Test Engineer will help manage and support approvals projects, and occasionally interface with various agencies to support product certification to safety and performance standards. This role is targeted for new college graduates. The Approvals Test Engineer is part of the Det-Tronics Engineering Approvals Team and will assist with the ongoing work required to obtain and maintain product compliance with the required industry regulations. This role will contribute to product analysis and hands-on product testing to verify compliance, and interface with regulatory agencies to create and prepare the submission materials to acquire certification. They may also provide support to other working groups on compliance matters such as advising with the design team on sustaining and new product development (NPD) projects, and answering approvals-related customer questions.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Understand product requirements and develop certification strategies to meet those requirements. 

  • Create test plans, and compile test results in compliance with company and industry standards and policies. 

  • Prepare technical justifications and technical documents to demonstrate compliance to applicable standards. 

  • Support interfacing with third-party certification agencies, and managing projects with them. 

  • Write and execute test protocols in accordance with approval standards and procedures, record results and write test reports.  

  • Assist in maintaining existing certifications, and support preparations for audits and participate in audits.  

  • Previous experience in the design and certification of products used in hazardous locations, including performance certifications, is desirable. 

  • Prioritize and manage work requests in an organized and timely manner.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Associate engineering degree

Preferred Qualifications: 

: 

  • At least 3 years of experience in testing products and at least 1 year in approvals/compliance engineering. 

  • Bachelor’s degree (Electrical Engineering Highly preferred). 

  • Experience with sustaining and new product development projects, and strong working knowledge of product development processes particularly verification and validation testing. 

  • Must be able to follow department operating procedures and have an open attitude for continuous improvement.  

  • Must have solid written and verbal communication skills in order to clearly present data and articulate test results to agencies and other internal working groups.  

  • Must have good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once.  

  • Must be able to perform essential job functions safely, and work within established company guidelines. 

  • Experience with hazardous location and/or performance standards (FM, CSA, ATEX, IECEx) is desired.
