About the Role:

The Advanced Materials Engineering (AME) group is responsible for development, design and implementation of new materials technology and applications.  The AME group is currently seeking an engineer to assist in the application of new materials and structures to Carrier’s products.  The engineer will work with global, cross disciplinary teams to apply model-based design and verification tools and methods to develop the next generation of materials for a full range of HVAC/R equipment and systems for buildings and transport applications.

This position is in Indianapolis, IN and will support the Carrier’s central research and development as part of the Advanced Materials Engineering department. The selected individual will work closely with engineers and other technicians to support global development platforms.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Exploit knowledge of material responses across varying environmental conditions to make novel material design decisions and accelerate product verification.
  • Develop models and corresponding experimental validation methods to screen and qualify materials for product designs.
  • Confirm model outputs through rigorous laboratory and field validation.
  • Be familiar with a wide range of materials processing as it applies to a production environment. (casting, extrusion, forming, joining, etc.)
  • Primary materials focus includes steel (plain carbon, low alloy, stainless), aluminum, and copper alloys.
  • Participate in program planning, reviews, and reporting, based on both model and experimental validation.
  • Work with Carrier teams and suppliers to implement corrosion and coating designs.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, following all procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Must be self-driven and capable of conducting extensive development without frequent supervisor input.
  • Must maintain an acceptable attendance, performance, and discipline record.
  • 5% domestic and international travel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in research and development (R&D) in HVAC and/or manufacturing industry experience (materials, appliance, aerospace, automotive, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in engineering with 1+ year(s) of R&D in HVAC or manufacturing industry experience
  • Must be detail oriented, mechanically inclined and have experience with basic shop tools, digital photography, and computer usage (including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Metallic and non-metallic materials properties and characterization
  • Experience with materials modeling tools.
  • Be familiar with metallurgical laboratory techniques including specimen preparation, LM, EM, and materials characterization.
  • Excellent communications skills are needed to provide oral and written reports to internal and external customers
  • Self-motivated, willing to work on a variety of projects, and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Capable of working in a team-oriented environment across a multi-cultural global organization.
  • Expertise in basic software operation (Microsoft office) required.  Familiarity with specialty software for analysis, tracking and simulation (Minitab, JMP, LabVIEW, Ansys/Nastran FEA, etc.) would be a significant benefit.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, RedX, and Six Sigma process improvement techniques would be a benefit.
