Principal Engineer, Modeling & Controls Engineering
Job Number: 10051
External Description:
We are seeking a talented, highly motivated, and results-driven Principal Controls Engineer with deep expertise in advanced control system design for data center applications. This role combines system-level control architecture, robust control engineering, advanced optimal control, and hands-on commissioning leadership to ensure high availability, stability, and energy-efficient performance in dynamic, high-density thermal environments.
As a technical leader, you will define scalable control architectures, drive predictive and optimization-based strategies, and mentor engineering teams across global programs. This position requires ownership across the full product lifecycle — from concept and architecture definition through validation, deployment, commissioning, and continuous improvement, and to do so in close collaboration with product design teams.
If you are passionate about building reliable, high-performance control systems for mission-critical applications and thrive on solving complex system-level challenges, we would love to hear from you.
This role is fully onsite. The selected candidate will work daily from one of the following primary locations:
· Kennesaw, GA: 1025 Cobb Place Boulevard, 30144
· Syracuse, NY: 6304 Carrier Parkway East, 13057
Key Job Responsibilities
· Lead the design, development, and delivery of robust, production-ready control solutions for data center platforms by ensuring compliance with customer and technical requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
· Define scalable control architecture for data center HVAC platforms, including chillers, cooling plants, fan coil units, liquid cooling solutions, and supervisory plant controllers.
· Lead the design and development of advanced control strategies that optimize performance, energy efficiency, and system robustness, including supervisory optimal control, model predictive control, robust and adaptive control, fault-tolerance control, etc.
· Lead decomposition of system-level requirements into control functional specifications.
· Support the development and calibration of physics-based plant models. Utilize models for design exploration, control system analysis, verification, and validation.
· Support system-level commissioning activities, including startup strategy definition, control sequence validation, and tuning in real operating environments.
· Drive project execution by setting clear technical goals, managing timelines, and coordinating teams. Mitigate risks, align stakeholders, and ensure on-time, high-quality delivery.
Required Qualifications
· Master of Science in Control Systems, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
· 15+ years of advanced controls system experience.
· Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally up to 3 times per year.
Preferred Qualifications
· PhD
· Experience with data center cooling or high-reliability plant-level HVAC control system designs.
· Proficient knowledge of controls engineering foundations, including feedback control, linear/nonlinear control, multivariable control, system identification, and constrained optimization and predictive control.
· Proven experience implementing model predictive control, or optimization-based supervisory control in real-time energy-efficient system design.
· Experience in advanced estimation techniques, including moving horizon estimation in real-time systems.
· Familiarity with real-time optimization algorithms and associated modeling approaches.
· Experience commissioning of chiller plants, liquid cooling systems, supervisory plant controls.
· Proficient in the use of MATLAB-based toolsets including Simulink to design, implement, and test embedded controls algorithms.
· Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of delivering results through effective teamwork.
· Experience in requirements management and system integration, specifically test strategies across model-in-the-loop (MIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) domains.
· Knowledge of acausal modeling languages such as Modelica.
