External Description:

We are seeking an accomplished, visionary, and results-oriented Principal Controls Engineer to provide technical leadership and drive the strategic direction of control systems development across carrier HVAC and refrigeration product portfolio.

In this role, you will serve as a recognized technical authority, leading the architecture, development, and deployment of control solutions while influencing product strategy, technology roadmaps, and engineering best practices. This position offers the opportunity to engage with multiple business units and contribute to a diverse product portfolio.

This role is fully onsite. The selected candidate will work daily from one of the following primary locations:

  • Syracuse, NY
  • Kennesaw, GA

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and adoption of common controls platforms to accelerate product development, improve technology reuse, and ensure consistent product quality across multiple product lines.
  • Lead the development and delivery of robust, production-ready control solutions by ensuring compliance with customer and technical requirements, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Drive project execution by setting clear technical goals, managing timelines, and coordinating teams. Mitigate risks, align stakeholders, and ensure on-time, high-quality delivery.
  • Support system-level requirement definition and drive low-level control requirement decomposition.
  • Provide technical leadership in the development of advanced control algorithms, including system identification, controllability, robustness, stability, optimization, and nonlinear control methodologies.
  • Support the development and calibration of physics-based plant models. Utilize models for design exploration, control system analysis, verification, and validation.
  • Develop & execute unit-tests & integration tests for control system.
  • Lead laboratory and field validation activities, including hands-on testing in psychrometric laboratories, and analyze results to drive continuous improvements in plant models, control algorithms, and overall system performance.
  • Apply best-in-class strategies to push testing further upstream in the development lifecycle (MIL/SIL/HIL)
  • Drive strategic initiatives to improve organizational quality and efficiency through technology advancement and process improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
  • 15+ years of advanced controls system experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD
  • Proficient knowledge of controls engineering foundations, including feedback control, linear/nonlinear control, multivariable control, system identification, and constrained optimization and predictive control.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of delivering results through effective teamwork.
  • Experience with industrial control applications.
  • Experience with vapor-compression cycles, including heat exchangers and turbomachinery compression technologies.
  • Experience driving controls platforming initiatives, common architectures, and technology roadmap development.
  • Proficient in the use of MATLAB-based toolsets including Simulink to design, implement, and test embedded controls algorithms.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of delivering results through effective teamwork.
  • Experience in requirements management and system integration, specifically test strategies across model-in-the-loop (MIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) domains.
  • Knowledge of acauasal modeling languages, such as Modelica.
  • Reside within a commutable distance to the Syracuse, NY facility.
