About this role

The Associate Director of Carrier Excellence (Cx) for HVAC Residential and Light Commercial (RLCS) has responsibility for the continued development, promotion and strategically aligned implementation of Carrier’s Operating System designed to drive world-class results in customer satisfaction, quality, on-time delivery, customer-value, and ultimately operating financial performance. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations, this individual will provide thought leadership, strategic direction, and lead the tactical implementation of a lean operating system across all of business units/functions.


The Associate Director, Carrier Excellence is responsible for building and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement that permeates all areas of the business. We are looking for someone with a proven track record of delivering results in a high-performance, continuous improvement environment through implementation of and expertise with the latest lean management methods. Demonstrated business acumen and a basic understanding of the P&L and balance sheet are required, as is a general management thought-process. A mindset that balances both thought and innovation with direct and successful execution is critical; along with working knowledge of the cultural issues impacting lean implementation and demonstrate success in overcoming these issues.

Ultimately, the successful candidate will bring a dynamic combination of experiences with interpersonal and communication skills that give superior credibility with executive leaders and down through all levels of the organization.  This person must have the ability to work across many peers and indirect subordinates in a matrixed environment, all the while in a hands-on, proactive, creative, and disciplined manner. Based in Indianapolis IN, but required to travel within the USA and Mexico quarterly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build “Carrier Excellence” capability across the business (in all functions)
  • In collaboration with the business, identify additional opportunity for operational / commercial improvement
  • Ensure operating metrics and key performance indicator systems are consistently tracking the appropriate measures and provoking appropriate responsive behavior
  • Participate in factory monthly Operating Reviews and RLCS Operations Reviews to ensure focus and sense of urgency with respect to the business priorities
  • Constructively challenge leaders on their use of Cx to deliver world-class results
  • Promote Cx “best practices” across the business units and functions
  • Assist management to meet and exceed performance objectives through Cx implementation
  • Support implementing continuous improvement initiatives with the supply base to improve supplier quality and cost of poor quality
  • Develop and mentor Cx leaders/practitioners through assessments, training and certification processes
  • Lead benchmarking studies to expose operations/supply chain leadership to cutting edge best practices and to evolve our manufacturing and supply chain capabilities
  • Support “Voice of the Customer” initiatives by developing the process of prioritizing the opportunities to improve the customer experience

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10 years plus of operations and/or continuous improvement experience

Preferred Qualifications

Other qualifications you may have that would be beneficial in this role include:

  • MBA
  • Lead implementation of the operating system across the enterprise
  • Effectively articulate issues, facilitate resolution, and report results orally and in writing to multiple levels in the organization
  • Ability to design, develop and execute lean operating system roadmaps for the operating units
  • TPS/Lean Sigma tools i.e. VSM, Standard Work, Pull Systems & Kanban, SIOP, Lean Daily Management, 5S/Visual Management, 3P, SMED, TPM, Transactional Process Improvement, Variation Reduction and Six Sigma 
  • Continuous improvement tools that apply to commercial operations i.e. VOC, NPD, NPI, & Value Selling.
  • Consultative mind set, work side-by-side with business and functional leaders to drive improvements
