About this role
The Senior Design Engineer- Controls is a senior level position reporting to an Engineering Manager and can include the option of managing and training direct reports. As a Senior Design Engineer- Controls at NORESCO, you’ll work with our internal project teams and Cybersecurity specialists to ensure that final controls and engineering designs will achieve the energy savings guarantees and functional performance specified by our customers.
This is an opportunity to observe your controls designs become part of a successful energy conservation measure. Your work will span multiple markets and facility types, so you’re never confined to a single system or building type. You’ll take on controls projects ranging from campuses and central plants to federal facilities, legacy retrofits, and advanced control systems for some of the most recognized organizations in the country. The diversity and scale of these projects keep the technical challenge fresh and give you the chance to grow your expertise with every assignment.
You will join a team of several dozen design engineers in an engineering-centric organization, NORESCO has over 150 in-house engineers from nearly every discipline. Senior Design Engineers are key members of our project teams and are relied upon for strong technical leadership.
Our project teams include representatives from multiple departments; Development, Analysis, Design, Cybersecurity, Construction, M&V, Commissioning, and O&M. Senior Design Engineers – Controls are engaged with multiple projects and support project teams from initial development through construction and into operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- The Senior Design Engineer- Controls is responsible for a collaborative Design/Build process which leverages NORESCO technical expertise with external engineering, vendor, and subcontractor partners.
- Manage the design and engineering process on assigned projects; Refine schedules, scopes of work, and budgets with the project team, lead design review meetings and charrettes, manage engineering consultants, track design submissions, customer approvals, and ensure all elements of scope are accurately designed, documented, reviewed, and distributed to the project team for use during construction.
- Create and refine competitive Technical Solutions and controls based Energy Conservation Measures in collaboration with our Project Developers and in response to our customer’s needs.
- Complete site investigations, data collection, preparation of conceptual design documents (i.e. points lists, schematics, control sequences, network architecture, equipment selections, preliminary drawings, scopes of work, specifications, etc.).
- Support project pricing effort in partnership with NORESCO Construction department; Final bid packages, subcontractor qualification, subcontractor bid-walks, use of third-party consultants, bid reviews, value engineering, evaluation of life cycle and long-term service agreements, etc.
- Support project team during construction, commissioning, and performance phases to resolve design issues, document as-built conditions, and ensure performance objectives are met.
- Assists with energy cost saving calculations for a variety of system types which may include HVAC, Chilled Water, Boilers, Energy Storage, or other facility infrastructure projects.
- Participate in the equipment evaluation and procurement process, including development of specifications and vendor scopes of work, design review, and periodic vendor shop inspections.
- Identify key customer interests, needs, and drivers. Review these with project team members to refine strategies and develop scopes that address these concerns in the proposed project.
- Anticipated Travel 20-35%.
Required Qualifications:
- 6+ years of Design Controls Engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer’s registration.
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical or Civil Engineering.
- High level communication, leadership, engineering, and project management skills.
- Strong sense of ownership, understands the importance of maintaining project schedules, resolving issues in a timely manner, and in consistently meeting deadlines and commitments.
- Strong interest in engaging clients, customers, and partners to grow relationships.
- Advanced knowledge of one or more facets of control systems and engineering; design principles, technologies, energy optimization, utility rates, energy costs, applicable codes, design guides, and standards.
- Desire to build and maintain respectful and inclusive working relationships with individual project team members to foster an environment of cooperation and productivity.
- Robust combination of business acumen, risk management, and strategic thinking skills.
- Experience with engineering criteria for federal facilities.
- Eligible to obtain federal security clearance.
- Independently plans, prioritizes, and manages multiple engineering projects; prioritizes tasks to ensure that the team's overall resources are used effectively and that project deadlines are met.
- Works cross functionally to lead complex engineering activities that may not be attributed to a defined discipline.
