About this role

We are seeking a Staff Lab Technician to join our Compression Engineering team at the Syracuse Innovation, Technology and Engineering (SITE) design center located in Syracuse, NY. You will play a pivotal role in the qualification of our next-generation compressor technologies (Centrifugal, Reciprocating, Rotary and Screw). Responsibilities include setup, maintenance, and operation of compressor performance and reliability test stands in a temperature-controlled laboratory setting.  The ability to perform hands-on work with mechanical and electrical systems including knowledge of best practices for piping systems as well as power and control system wiring per NEC (National Electric Code) and UL (Underwriters Laboratory) codes. Utilization of test and measurement equipment and lab data acquisition systems. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Installation and removal of compressors from test stands
  • Fabricate and connect associated piping, wiring, and test instrumentation
  • Perform system leak testing and transfer of refrigerants between test stands and storage containers
  • Perform compressor testing over operating conditions requested by global engineering team
  • Collect and manage test data using manual and automated data acquisition systems
  • Modify test setups (mechanically and/or electrically) as instructed by engineering team
  • Perform repairs, modifications and preventative maintenance of compressor test stands

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with completion of a recognized trade school program, apprenticeship, or workforce training in HVAC/R, Air Conditioning Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Compression Engineering;

OR

  • Associate degree in HVAC/R, Air Conditioning Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Universal EPA Section 608 Certification, or the ability to successfully complete the required training and obtain certification within 90 days of hire
  • Ability and willingness to obtain the required medical clearance and certification to operate Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIVs), including forklifts and work savers, within 90 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in air conditioning and refrigeration (automotive, commercial, industrial, or residential)
  • Working knowledge of commercial-industrial wiring, hydronic systems, AC Motors and Controls.
  • Experience with single phase and three phase electrical power systems, VFDs, PLCs, PID Controls, transducers, flow meters, lab instrumentation and electrical test equipment including Yokogawa Power Analyzers
  • Experience with National Instruments-LabVIEW data acquisition systems
  • Ability to braze large piping using oxy-acetylene torches, use overhead cranes and rigging equipment for test setups
  • Proficient IT skills including use of Microsoft 365 software suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, interpersonal, and analytical skills
  • Self-motivated and capable of working with an experienced technical team
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced changing environment with a focus on Safet
