About this role
Carrier is looking to hire a Director of External Partnerships, who will be responsible for leading external partnerships across engineering, including Government, Academia and Industrial engagements. This leadership role will be responsible for defining and executing a cohesive partnership strategy aligned with Carrier’s strategic technology areas of interest, including a focus on decarbonization in buildings and advanced technology development for heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and fire and security and related fields. The role will involve a broad degree of collaboration across global functional and business unit engineering, as well as coordination with other functions including strategy, business development, legal, and finance.
As the Director of External Partnerships, you will be responsible for developing and maturing partnerships with industrial firms and startups to drive differentiation in Carrier product and services. You will be an important partner to the Carrier Venture team to identify potential targets for engagement and venture investment. The leader will also build out a capability that does not currently exist at Carrier to secure Government research funding contracts aligned with Carrier’s technology strategy. This will involve coordinating a team of financial, legal, and contract experts across Carrier, and building and managing relationships with program managers at relevant government agencies, associated labs, and in academia.
The leader will also provide oversight of government proposal development and submission, follow-up, and tracking and reporting for awarded projects.
The role will also involve developing a global engineering academic partnership strategy aligned with the industry and government partnership approach and with Carrier’s recruiting engagement strategy. The focus will be on fewer strategic academic partners to scale research and talent recruitment coupled with local presence to maximize engagement. The leader will have oversight responsibility for investment and execution of the academic research portfolio, and be a primary focal point for University and other academic partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Define overall external partnership strategy aligned with Carrier strategic technologies; plan and execute initiatives to achieve strategy.
- Build and mature partnerships with industrial and start-up partners to drive differentiation in Carrier products and services.
- Collaborate with Carrier Ventures team to identify potential venture investment targets aligned with strategic technology areas; build and mature partnerships towards agreements.
- Ensure consistent partner contract and agreement execution to protect Carrier’s long-term interests and position in technology and IP ownership.
- Lead strategic planning, business development, relationship management, and program execution for government funded and Carrier cost-shared work.
- Identify and build partnerships with program managers at the Department of Energy and other departments. Interact with Program Managers and provide leadership to the program development at Carrier in the outlined technology areas.
- Closely work with Carrier functions and business units to enable government funded technology advancement at Carrier by leveraging projects/programs within other Carrier areas.
- Lead responses to government financial opportunity announcements for the relevant programs; manage and prioritize the budgets of the government funded programs.
- Develop strategy for global Academic partnerships with a focus on strategic long-term engagements to advance Carriers research and talent pipeline interests.
- Execute Academic engagement plans including contract negotiation and finalization.
- Coordinate and lead academic research portfolio in conjunction with technology and business unit engineering leadership.
- Willingness to travel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Engineering preferred)
- 10+ years of Partnership or Strategy development experience
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of partnership related experience – Government, Industry and/or Academia Proven success in developing and delivering complex initiatives across global enterprise
- Experience obtaining funding/grants from federal agencies (DOE and others), upwards of $10mm annually
- Proven track record of building trusted relationships with internal and external partners.
- Strategic Growth Mindset: Able to conceptualize, define and articulate strategy across complex global enterprise
- Problem Solving: Ability to solve problems using analytical thinking, reconciling viewpoints, and leveraging key relationships.
- Communication: Demonstrated ability to explain strategy and complex issues across a broad range of audiences
